About my work

My work explores the territory between the pictorial, sculptural, and architectural. Stone is my material of choice. I am fascinated by its deceptive physical rigidity, which through the rhythmic process of splitting open, at times reveals the most sensual of lines and scribbles, suggesting the liquid phase of its ancient forming, solidified into a still state, as a photograph arrests a particular moment in time. This association with photography has at times lead to various references to photographic formats.

My working process involves playing with materials, introducing them to each other, listening out for conversations that at times ensue. When drawn to, I  invite them centre stage, through a process of auditioning. I am finding a resistance to fix them to a part, excluding other possibilities, hence my attraction to temporary installation and animation. I also find mosaics hides so many of the materials' other facets, most of their body hiding, hence my move away from mosaics to a more sculptural  juxtapositions. One of my favourite elements of mosaics is the very fine linear space existing in between the individual material shapes. I avoid grout when I can as I find it can steal this breathing space.

It has become apparent to me that I like to work with stone in a way that brings out a softness. I feel at times I am dealing with flesh.

More recently I have returned to drawing.
